So my dad put on some story in the car about these scientists artificially inseminating a Panda

Now I know Pandas are going extinct and all, but does anyone else find this horribly immoral? To force a pregnancy on this panda against her will? It’s fucked up.

*sigh* I hate when people humanize animals. I used to breed rats, seriously, getting preggers isn’t something that is ‘emotionally harmful’ for animals unless you heap abuse on them while they are pregnant. It’s normal and natural for them and artificial insemination isn’t traumatic for them. Animals don’t function mentally like humans. It’s not going to be like some Lifetime movie like ‘She Woke up Pregnant!’ (real movie btw).

I also wanted to add that the reason Pandas are going extinct is because they’ve evolved to fit into a very narrow environmental niche that humans are interfering with. Female pandas and male pandas live in separate areas. During mating season they come to meet each other. Because of industrialization, deforesting and just in general getting in their way they’re dying out. Some species of animals are VERY difficult to breed in captivity because we have such a poor understanding of how they reproduce beyond the basics (sperm meets egg). Breeding in captivity is also difficult because they’re not in their natural setting. Some animals need outward triggers to help them mate (for example certain temperatures and humidity levels).

Any animal that is risking extinction should be fought for because most animals are going extinct directly because of humans. On a more selfish less ‘save them ‘cause they’re cute!’ or for me ‘save them because we’re fucking bastards for putting them into a situation that’s wiping them out!’ we can also develop amazing things from them that would otherwise be lost if they went extinct.
